CAROLINA BEACH NC: CARNIVAL GAME: Ah, the lure of winning something for 'nothing.' Of course, you can't win something for nothing, at least not very often.
Forty-two years ago when my daughter was three, my wife, daughter and I drove down to the Seaside Heights [NJ] boardwalk for a brisk walk in the biting, winter's air. It was mid-March, just before Easter, and clearly too early for the crowds that would saturate the boardwalk when the temperatures would settle in the 80s.
The boardwalk was dead with very few concessionaires open for the Easter business. While Seaside Heights did have 'skill games' such as this basketball game, it relied much more on countless variations of the spin-the-wheel games of chance that required no more skill to win than the ability to place a coin on a number-letter combination.
The odds were ALWAYS against you, but because of the numbers of folks playing there were always winners on those hot, humid nights in July and August. I was never one of the winners, you see. Truth be told, I just couldn't manage to pull a coin from my pocket and slap it down on B-10, Q-8, or S-3. I was too cheap to win, and too cheap to lose.
But, that sunny, Sunday afternoon was different.
As we pushed my daughter's stroller down the boardwalk one of the game operators shouted out, "And, we have another winner!"
I was quite surprised. Though his wheel was spinning, no one was playing. With no one playing, how could he have 'another' winner?
I looked at the man who claimed the winner. And, he looked at me.
As our eyes locked I became entranced. Without thinking, I walked to the counter and placed my quarter on D-1 just as the wheel was slowing down.
The wheel stopped.
The pointer was fixed on D-1.
"And, we have another winner!"
Daddy playing PS2 hot wheels game because CJ likes the racing cars. We went to Best Buy and they had a nice little set-up for the PS3 with a racing game and CJ saw it and he wanted to watch the cars racing. Of course Daddy is not going to give up the opportunity to play the PS3 so the both sat on the lounge chairs and played the game.
